Japan Karate Shoto (JKS) Federation - Takapuna Dojo

Welcome to JKS Takapuna - a Shotokan Karate Dojo with the right balance of hard-work and discipline combined with a friendly warm attitude.

Operated by Sensei Andrew and Sensei Gilvan, our dojo is open to all people who want to learn a traditional karate style that will improve their confidence and fitness while enjoying the camaraderie of like minded people.

We look to build a "family feeling" within the dojo - one where everyone is valued and welcomed as an important part of the whole.

Students are welcome as individuals, or as families where mum or dad and children enjoy the shared experience of training and reaching their goals.

We look forward to seeing you at the JKS Takapuna dojo.

"Seeing our students' gain confidence in their abilities and really enjoy our training sessions  is a great reward for the effort we put in. Our dojo succeeds because we support every individual effort, and see growth at all levels."

Sensei Gilvan

"We have a wide range of abilities in our dojo, and we celebrate every success that our students achieve, whether that is in the dojo learning a new kata or medalling in regional or national competitions. We like the family feeling we have built where everyone looks out for others in the dojo"

General Classes

Ages 8 years and older

The General Class is for all students from children through to teenagers and adults. The class focusses on the basics for every level of experience.

Particular attention is paid to Kihon - karate basics, then moving onto Kata and Kumite training.

Senior Training

4th Kyu and above

For Senior Training we up the intensity, and look to refine our techniques and knowledge of karate. More intense Kihon and Kumite are targeted with both budo and competition applications explored.

Higher level Shotokan katas and Koten katas are taught with technical improvement always a goal, and exploration of the bunkai (practical application) of each kata a must.

Traditional Shotokan Karate

Shotokan is a style of karate developed from various martial arts by Gichin Funakoshi and is widely credited with popularising "karate do" through a series of public demonstrations in Japan. As the most widely practiced style, Shotokan is considered a traditional and influential form of karate do.

Our traditional Shotokan Karate classes are designed to be both challenging and rewarding. They will improve your form, inner strength, and confidence. This learning process happens at your own pace in a friendly and fun atmosphere.

The classes are suitable for all ages and abilities and are ideal for families who would like to practise together.

Young Children's "Little Tigers" Karate

The Little Tigers Karate classes focus on improving a child’s basic motor and listening skills while developing the basics of karate. These skills will help them in their daily lives with a more confident and enthusiastic outlook.

They will become better students at school, better listeners at home and more ambitious towards the future. Our classes will enhance positive development in a fun and motivating way.

In the children’s Karate classes your child will be exposed to positive social interaction. They will learn how to work with others and follow directions from their instructors - all whilst learning, exercising, and developing their new skills in a fun and positive environment.

Sport Karate

Competing at any level can bring the best out of an individual. Whether that is in a local tournament or at an international competition with competitors from around the world - competing and possibly winning is a huge motivation. The thrill of competition, the camaraderie among teammates, and reward of self-improvement are all major benefits.

JKS Takapuna actively encourage our members into competition if they choose to go along that route. However, the training and personal development of the individual is still the foundation for their karate.

Sport Karate consists of two disciplines, with training and guidance is provided for both. Kata - the solo forms, and Kumite - the point sparring event. Competitors can choose in which discipline they would like to compete, or the competitor may choose to compete in both. The choice is yours.
